In this Lonely Space for solo marimba
in this lonely space for solo 5.0 octave marimba is a solo that I originally intended to be for an intermediate marimbist; however, as I developed the material, I found that the sound I wanted required a little more of the instrument and performer, so I changed the intent to a more intermediate-advanced performer and a 5.0 octave marimba instead of a 4.3 octave.
The material within the solo always has something to do with a sort of mock-reverb, decay, or echo. The overall idea is that each big note has a few smaller notes that follow right behind it. Because of this, not all of the small notes have to speak as much as we might usually think. Feel free to let them feel ghosted.
This is best achieved with some sort of multi-tonal marimba mallet with a soft yarn and a harder core. I personally used a soft yarn mallet with a hard core and a bass mallet as my mallet 1.
I encourage the performer to think gesturally instead of too much on the grid for some of these phrases. Feel free to push and pull with each phrase and don’t feel tied down by the tempo indicator.
