Silent Echoes for solo trumpet and electronics
Silent Echoes creates a soundscape of the “Appalachian Gothic” aesthetic utilizing traditional shape note melodies and trumpet delay effects. The piece fragments the Sacred Harp tune Idumea, also known as And Am I Born to Die?, as a basis for the aesthetic, with pieces of it being revealed throughout until a ghost choir sings it at the coda with the trumpet soloist. The trumpet interacts with both a vocal ensemble and a trumpet ensemble in the electronic backing track, creating the illusion of delay in a live setting.
